High on the wall above the doors as you leave the nave of the church is a monumental slab dedicated to the Stephenson family. Peter Stephenson was a surgeon apothecary of Hexham who died in 1828. Lough sculpted the slab before he became famous. He later made the bronze memorial to George Stephenson which stands in front of Newcastle Central Station, and also a statue of Queen Victoria in the Royal Exchange, London. |
